Amanda Bishop is a graduate of Visteon’s Momentum program and her story serves as a blueprint on how to thrive in a transformative environment, embrace unique opportunities and find the keys to success.
I was born and raised in Michigan, with my parents and two younger sisters. As the oldest kid, I quickly learned the meaning of responsibility and self-sufficiency due to the challenges that struck my family during my childhood. Both my youngest sister and my mother faced severe illnesses, which required me to become a caregiver at a young age. These difficulties, though undoubtedly tough, taught me a great deal of discipline early in life.
Growing up, my family had a strong work ethic rooted in blue-collar jobs. My parents didn’t have the opportunity to pursue higher education. However, they recognized the changing world and emphasized the importance of a college degree. As a first-generation college graduate, I took off on my educational journey with little guidance. I chose to major in Communications and minor in Business, fascinated by the business realm. After a few years, I pursued a Master of Business Administration, graduating with high honors.
As my career progressed at Visteon, one of the most significant teaching moments was understanding the difference between excellence and perfection. For years, I believed that success meant never making a mistake and having all the answers. However, I realized that success lies in managing mistakes, learning from failures, and continuously striving for improvement. This epiphany transformed the way I approached my work and guided my expanding teams.
Throughout my 23 years with Visteon, I have been fortunate to work for a company that has undergone incredible transformations. The company not only adapted to changing times but also offered unique and challenging roles. Often, I managed unconventional assignments, expanding my skill set and taking on new responsibilities.
In recent years, my growth within Visteon has been particularly pronounced since transitioning to the Legal team. With an expanding role in Compliance and Risk Management, I have been entrusted with projects that continue to refine my skills. In addition to my regular responsibilities, I am currently working on a project to align Visteon’s supply chain with our commitment to Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives. In an ever-changing world, Visteon understands the importance of meeting the expectations of our customers and stakeholders. By fostering strong partnerships with our suppliers, we can collectively contribute to a more sustainable and socially responsible future.
Reflecting on my journey at Visteon, I’m grateful for its fulfillment and empowerment. I’ve evolved into a resilient professional, embracing change and pushing boundaries. As a woman in leadership, I aim to empower others, maximizing their impact. Visteon’s Momentum program has been instrumental, blending classroom knowledge with practical engagement.
With Ian Scott, VP of European Customer Group, as my promoter, and my manager, Brett Pynnonen, Senior VP and Chief Legal Officer, as my mentor, I applied program concepts to real-life situations. Determination, resilience, flexibility, rationality, and a supportive environment pave the path to success for women in any field. I’m thankful to be part of Visteon, an organization fostering diversity and inclusivity.
To young professionals, I offer three pieces of advice:
Nothing compares to the value of observing and learning from face-to-face interaction. And, to all aspiring leaders, remember that your circumstances do not define your potential. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and never stop striving for excellence. With the right mindset and support, you can inspire change, build strong and high-functioning teams, and lead others to success.
