Long Life Filtration System
Visteon's innovative, patented Long Life Filtration System makes it possible for vehicles to operate using the same air filter for at least 300,000 miles without changing or cleaning the filter. This is the only zero maintenance long-life filter offered by a Tier 1 supplier.
The Long Life Filtration System is an air-induction system that contains a reticulated foam filter that traps over 300 grams of dust, salt, moisture and other corrosives, greatly outlasting traditional air filters. Traditional filters, engineered to last 30,000 miles, have a capacity of 80 grams to 300 grams, depending on the engine size and type of vehicle. The filer can hold 300 grams to 500 grams (depending on engine size), an appropriate capacity for 150,000 mile to 200,000 mile filter life.
The reticulated foam within the Long Life Filtration System is 97 percent porous, capturing dust and other contaminants within the depths of the foam layers. Using several foam pore densities balances the cost and efficiency of this system.
Completely encased within the Long Life Filtration System, this filter eliminates the need for replacement filters. Manufacturers will enjoy reduced warranty costs associated with air filter service. Consumers will no longer need to worry about installation problems that can damage the vehicle's engine, such as having installed the wrong filter or having installed the right filter incorrectly. In addition to increasing convenience, this innovation is expected to save consumers as much as $150 or more over the life of the vehicle.
Flexible Packaging
Because this system doesn't require regular maintenance attention, there is a great deal of flexibility in packaging the system within the vehicle. The entire air induction system could even be placed in another section of the vehicle, freeing up valuable space near the engine.
The system can be modified to match specific market requirements and can be equipped with a reminder, such as an indicator light that would warn consumers of an improperly functioning filter.
Designed for Sustainability
The Visteon Long Life Filtration System is designed to meet the needs of sustainable design in a number of ways. First, the zero maintenance feature of this system eliminates the need to make replacement filter elements and the need to dispose of used elements. As many as 10 filters can be eliminated over the vehicle life. Second, the system can integrate a partial zero emissions vehicle (PZEV)-level hydrocarbon trap and meets the regulatory requirement of being tamper-resistant. This allows for a more efficient system design by eliminating the material required to make an additional hydrocarbon trap. Lastly, the system is made from up to 30 percent Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastic resins, turning used materials like carpet fiber into useful parts.
Up to 300,000 Mile Filter Life
In addition to intensive laboratory testing, Visteon placed the units in 50 taxicabs and operated them under extreme North American on-road driving conditions in Arizona , Florida , Nevada and New York . The test was extremely successful, ending before any of the filters required replacement. Some vehicles had been driven up to 300,000 miles without requiring filter replacement.
