Visteon showcases advanced technology at new software development center in Romania

Opening the doors to its latest software development facility, Visteon welcomed more than 150 guests at its “Open House” event on June 14 in Timisoara, Romania. Visteon’s European engineering leaders hosted the event and showcased the advanced technologies the new center will support, including many industry-firsts such as fully reconfigurable, digital clusters and the SmartCore™ cockpit domain controller.

During the event, the visitors – who included a wide range of engineers, software developers and academic contacts – joined the Visteon team in discussions on the latest cockpit electronics trends such as 3D clusters, curved displays and domain controllers paving the way for connected and autonomous driving. In addition, recently launched products with Visteon’s European customers were demonstrated in a Mercedes A-Class featuring the industry-first SmartCore™ cockpit domain controller; and large format, high-resolution digital clusters and center displays in the Range Rover Evoque and BMW 3-series.

The 5,000m² facility, located in Timisoara’s new ISHO campus, is primarily engaged in software development for advanced cockpit electronics products – including digital instrument clusters, infotainment and information displays – and will support the development of new technologies for connected and autonomous driving.

Presenting new technology developments that address the automotive evolution to a fully digital cockpit supporting connected and automated driving, Visteon leaders Mark Fosmoen, vice president; Jay Patel, engineering director; Velizar Dimov, software director and Timisoara center lead Ivan Mihaylov, demonstrated the critical importance of software development which is expected to account for more than 30 percent of new vehicle content.

Mark Fosmoen, vice president, customer engineering - Europe, Visteon
"Today, software is the key enabler of automotive innovation and our engineers and developers have a unique opportunity to directly influence new mobility solutions. We are building a highly competent team who enjoy the excitement of developing new technology in a start-up environment. The projects we are working on in Timisoara are already demonstrating the impact we have in making the vehicle cockpit a seamless digital experience.”
Mark Fosmoen, vice president, customer engineering - Europe, Visteon

The Timisoara center is an important expansion of Visteon’s European product development footprint and will support Visteon’s growth with key strategic customers such as Jaguar Land Rover, Daimler (Mercedes), BMW and PSA among others.

With plans to employ up to 400 specialists in 2020, the Timisoara technology center is on a fast track to have full product development competence – transforming customer requirements into fully tested solutions for mass production.

Sergiu Gheju, Software Engineer
"We are currently focusing on software development. The initial projects we are working on are for JLR, developing software for a major platform for digital clusters and displays that will feature in the majority of the automaker’s vehicles. The target is to have full development capability in Timisoara – this includes mechanical and hardware development as well as testing and validation – and in the next phase we will start testing the products we are developing here.“
Sergiu Gheju, Software Engineer
